TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Previously I have taught at Whitman College, Yakima Valley College, Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis, and Indiana University. I have taught in a variety of modalities (asynchronous online, hybrid) and across the Sociology curriculum. Through my courses I aim for students to develop their conceptual toolkits, improve their writing and critical thinking skills, and learn to appreciate cultural diversity.
Below is a sampling of the courses I have taught:
Introduction to Sociology
Work and Organizations
Sociology of Culture
Social Theory
Research Methods
Senior Thesis/Capstone
COMBINING TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP
Besides teaching, I have co-authored an introductory sociology text. The text, is an open educational resource, which is free to students and faculty, and given the licensing, open for faculty to edit and make it their own. In the text, Jennifer Puentes, and I try to build a multi-level, intersectional approach throughout. Rather than confine race, class, and gender, to specific chapters or levels of analysis, we attempt to incorporate inclusive and diverse examples in all the chapters. We also incorporated regional examples related to the Pacific Northwest, emphasizing the importance of place and context in understanding sociology. We do this while covering what you would expect to find in most introductory texts. The text was both peer reviewed and piloted by faculty. We were able to accomplish this with the support of Open Oregon and their team.
